Police officer among three people arrested with ivory

An Administration Police Corporal and two other civilians are expected in court  on Tuesday to face charges of trafficking 40 kilogrammes of ivory valued at Sh400,000.

The officer and his civilian accomplice were arrested on Monday with two elephant tusks weighing 40 kilogrammes at the Kawangware AP Camp in Nairobi.

The vehicle they were transporting the ivory, Nissan Sunny was also impounded.

The suspects will be arraigned at Kibera Law Courts in Nairobi, officials said.
Officials said the investigations reveal the AP obtained the ivory from a foreigner he had arrested two months ago.

Instead of surrendering them to authorities, he decided to keep them as he sought for market.

According to police and Kenya Wildlife Service officials, the officer had approached a possible buyer and tried to sell the ivory at Sh10,000 a kilo.
He was arrested as he tried to sell them by the buyer who happened to be an undercover detective.

Nairobi Area head of police Benson Kibui confirmed the incident and said they are investigating to establish if there are more accomplices involved.
A woman suspect was also arrested with four kilogrammes of ivory in Westlands and will be arraigned in court.

At the same time, two suspected poachers are being pursued after their accomplice was gunned down during a shootout with KWS rangers in Tana River County.
They were all armed with AK 47 rifles and had killed a buffalo at Sheikh Bin in Tana River Game Reserve.

One magazine and 27 rounds of ammunition were recovered.
In Isiolo County, a gang of 17 suspected poachers are being pursued after an exchange of fire with police in Shaba National Reserve.
