In an exclusive interview with The Standard during a tour of areas hard hit by gangsters in Bungoma County, the Senate Minority Leader revealed that immediately after a tour by Deputy President William Ruto in Bungoma on Friday, leaflets warning of an impending attack at his home at Namuyemba estate within Bungoma town were dropped at his gate.
Accompanied by Kanduyi Member of Parliament Wafula Wamunyinyi and Bungoma County Assembly Majority Leader Majimbo Okumu, Wetang’ula reiterated that he will not be cowed by threats on his life and residents adding that he will stand firm to defend them because that is his duty as a leader.
“I am surprised by the manner in which these gangsters appear to be very emboldened even following a warning by the deputy president and the top security organs in the country! My message to them is that we as leaders will not fear them!” he stressed.
The Senator added that immediately after Ruto’s visit to the area, gangsters attacked Tulumba, Mandizini and Musikoma villages but this time quick action by the General Service Unit (GSU) personnel managed to scare them into the night.
Residents from the three villages reported that a group of raiders numbering between 20 and 30 had descended on several homes but fled after screams from their targets attracted security officers on patrol who responded on time.
Wetang’ula and Wamunyinyi also visited and condoled with the family of a Bungoma businessman and church leader, Timothy Nyongesa who was hacked to death by gangsters. His wife and daughter were seriously injured during the attack on Thursday night.
He welcomed the decision by the United Nations to term the Bungoma killings as crimes against humanity saying that as leaders from the area, they also classify the situation in the same category.
“We want to tell the government that it will be in order for it to provide adequate security for our residents because this is its duty as enshrined in the constitution,” demanded Wamunyinyi.
The MP further called on the government to assist in footing medical and burial expenses for the victims and at the same time compensate them following the attacks that have gone on unabated for more than a month now.
