Obama plans to detain Uhuru But we will creat another Mau Mau to deal with Him—Museveni says.
"Let them not dare for Mau Mau
will be reborn an it will bring their machinery to dust "said agitated Museveni.
Uganda President Yoweri Musevenihas sensationally claimed that thereis a plot to detain President UhuruKenyatta at The Hague when histrial begins on July 9.
President Museveni is said to
havetold
heads of state from East andHorn of Africa
meeting under theumbrella of the
Inter-GovernmentalAuthority on Development
(Igad) onFriday night that the InternationalCriminal Court (ICC) was notsincere in its dealings on theKenyan case.
“ICC should tell us if they plan
todetain
[Mr] Kenyatta. They shouldgive us an
explanation if he is goingto come back to Kenya
because theinformation we are receiving isdifferent,” Mr Museveni was quotedas saying in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The source, who could not benamed for protocol reasons,
said MrMuseveni added: “We will notagree to have him attend if theintention is to detain him. If wedon’t have a clear picture of theplans by the International Court, then it means our relations withthem will be soured.
They shouldtreat us with dignity.”The Igad heads of state alsochallenged the ICC to give acomprehensive
report on theschedule of President Kenyatta’strial.
It was not immediately clear whyMr Museveni made the
claims, especially because PresidentKenyatta and his Deputy WilliamRuto, who are accused of crimesagainst humanity over the 2007/8post-election violence, have been co-operating with the ICC since theywere indicted in 2011. PresidentKenyatta took office on April 9 and, among other things, promised torespect international laws and clearhis name in court.
Mr Ruto travelled to The Hague
twoweeks
ago for a meeting with thejudges, of his own
volition, andpledged to co-operate with thecourt. He successfully petitionedthe court to move his trial fromMay 28 to a new date yet to be set.
Under the ICC rules, Mr Kenyatta,Mr Ruto and radio presenter
JoshuaSang can only be detained if theprosecutor applies for an arrestwarrant on the grounds that theyhad breached the conditions thatallowed them to attend trial as freemen. These include interfering withwitnesses, refusing to co-operatewith the court, inciting people toviolence and committing furthercrimes against humanity.
Mr Museveni is behind the push byAfrican Union heads of
state to askthe ICC to drop the Kenya cases. Acouncil of foreign ministers votedon Thursday for the case to bebrought back to Kenya or thecharges
be investigated afresh. OnlyBotswana opposed
the resolution.
“We are asking the ICC to stop
theprosecution
of the two Kenyanprincipals, if not then they
shouldre-investigate the cases becausethere are a lot of falsehoods thatled to the prosecution of theseindividuals,” said Mr Sam Kutesa,Uganda’s Foreign Affairs minister.
Zambia President Michael Sata
toldjournalists
at the African Unionheadquarters on Friday
eveningthat Africa should learn to dealwith her problems.Challenged
Kenyans
“Where was The Hague when Africawas fighting for
Independence? Ifyou find a Kenyan or Zambianpresident at fault, let the Kenyan orZambian people deal with him, notThe Hague,” said Mr Sata.
"Let them not dare for Mau Mau
will be reborn an it will bring their machinery to dust "said agitated Museveni.
