CORD presidential candidate Raila Odinga will contest the outcome of the March 4 General Election in the Supreme Court.
His advisor Salim Lone said: “Indeed the Hon
Raila Odinga will be contesting the presidential results, because the election
was flawed.”
In a telephone interview with Capital FM News, Lone said: “Raila will
file a case at the Supreme Court to challenge the election results.”
Official results out of the March 4 presidential poll placed Uhuru
Muigai Kenyatta winner of the election having attained 6,173,433 million votes
out of a total of 12,338,667 million votes cast to become the country’s new
leader, 50 years after his independence hero father, Kenya’s founding president
Jomo Kenyatta.
The 51-year-old outgoing deputy prime minister – charismatic, able to
appeal to all classes and one of Africa’s richest men garnered 50.03 percent,
effectively achieving slightly more than the required 50 percent plus one
threshold after Monday’s vote.
He beat his main rival Raila Amollo Odinga of the CORD coalition who
polled 5,340,546 million votes – or 43.28 percent of the total votes cast.
Kenyatta was due to be declared Kenya’s fourth president later on Saturday
to take over from Mwai Kibaki who has served for two uninterrupted terms.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission said Friday night
that it would announce the final results at 11 am on Saturday.
The new president is due to be sworn into office on March 26.
