People fight for Sh6million ‘fake cash’ in Naivasha

There was drama in Naivasha when unknown people dumped over Sh6m fake currency into a river causing a stampede.

The suspects dumped the cash into River Malewa along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway after noticing that they were being trailed by police.

Following the move, police raised a red-flag over the presence of fake currency in the town and its suburbs and called on locals to be vigilant.

It is suspected that the fake Sh1,000 currency notes was en route Western Kenya to be used in the ongoing campaigns.

Drama started after a vehicle ferrying the cash from Nairobi towards Nakuru noticed the Highway patrol vehicle.

“The suspects drove into the nearby KCC village where they dumped the cash into the river before driving off in a huff,” said a witness.

Some of the locals nearly drowned as they fought over the ‘free cash’ floating on the river before police moved in.

Confirming the incident, Naivasha OCPD Charles Kortok said they recovered over Sh0.5m within minutes of arrival at the scene.

The OCPD termed this a small fraction of the sum dumped into the river and called on those who had collected the cash to hand it over to them.

“We have recovered around Sh500,000 in fake currencies and we have put traders on high alert as the cash could end up in their shops,” he said.

The police boss said they have launched investigations into the matter.

He said the vehicle carrying the loot was heading to Western Kenya from Nairobi adding that no suspect had been arrested.

“We fear that the cash was meant to be used in the ongoing campaigns and our officers are working on the case,” he said.
